The Gift That Was Never Bought - The Mysterious Letter
March 24, 2018
“You sure this is the place?” Serah asked with a bit of confusion.
“I think so, in fact, the map says so, let me check again” Avi replied taking his phone from the dashboard.
“Yes, this is the place. See, there is the signboard that’s mentioned in the letter. I wonder what awaits us here.” Avi pointed out. Serah looked out and saw what Avi was talking about. It was a hilly area and a visual treat for the eyes. But Serah’s mind was asking the same question Avi had asked. ‘What awaits them here?’
“I wonder if there would be proper network connection on the top. I have to make some calls. You please wait here.” Avi said.
Serah nodded her head and smiled. Avi didn’t fail to notice that even after 6 years, she still managed to keep the mischievous smile he always adored, but never complimented. He went outside and started his calls.
Watching Avi talking on his phone and walking along the roadside, Serah’s mind went back to their college days. Avinash aka Avi and Serah were classmates in Engineering college. But their friendship began to grow after their 3rd-year arts fest. Avi was the captain of their house. His vice-captain suddenly fell ill and it was then Serah offered her help. Once the arts fest was over, they had become great friends. Rest of their college life was spent together. It was the most fun-filled period of their life. Even after college, they were in contact. Serah wondered when they got too busy in their new life and lost contact with each other. The friendship was limited to bday wishes and other occasional messages.
“Hey, Serah! It looks like someone is in deep thoughts. Any plans on a Shayari? Hello, first you come out na!” Avi shouted.
“You idiot will always stay idiot na? How can I come out if you stand like Bahubali, next to the door?” Serah shouted back and laughed.
“Sorry, It's my honour ma’am. Please..” Avi opened the door and showed the hand gesture as if he was showing the way to a princess.
“Someone is learning how to impress girls, not bad.” Serah acknowledged his gesture with a fake applause. Avi smiled and locked the car.
“Shall we move?”
“Yes, Sir!”
Both of them begin to walk through the road. The road they came diverged in two, one well maintained and the other unconstructed walking path. Serah suddenly remembered the poem, ‘The Road not taken’ by Robert Frost. She tried to remember the lines and started humming it.
Avi looked at her with astonishment.
“You know I was thinking of the same poem. The similarity of the road mentioned in the poem and this path is uncanny” Avi said in excitement.
“That’s true. By the way, do you have any idea, where we are going and who is the stranger who sent us the letters?” Serah asked.
“No, Absolutely no idea.” Avi shrugged.
It was two weeks before, Avi and Serah received a letter in their respective offices. Avinash took the letter from his pocket and started reading it again.
Dear Avinash and Serah,
Ever heard of angels and magic wands? I Believe you guys are angels. Want to see the magic your magic wand has done? I invite you to my magic land. See you on this March 24th.
Yours lovingly
Ajay
Below was a QR code when scanned led them to a webpage where the map of the destination and instructions were given.
Avi and Serah contacted each other about the letter. Avi was tired of corporate race and Serah in the depression of a messiest relationship and breakup. They both decided to take the much-needed break and travelled to this place. It was on the outskirts of Munnar, a beautiful place for recreation.
Avi folded the letter and put it back in the pocket. As they walked in silence, their heartbeat raced due to anticipation and excitement. Avi was confused whether it is the suspense or her presence that make his heart beat faster.
Avi calmly looked at Serah, she was still in her thoughts.
“Serah, someone once told me, past is the tool that defines you, it's your past that shapes you. If this wasn’t your past, there is No YOU! But someone else”
“You still remember what I said? I understand what you are trying to say Avi and trust me, I am trying to get out of my miseries.” Serah smiled as always.
“Just saying and don’t forget, this idiot is by your side. If I ever tried to go away, you have the right to stop me and you know that!”
“Wah, someone is being philosophical, kya baat hai” Serah laughed at him.
“You always mock me when I say something serious, you stupid.” Avi was trying to say more, but Serah stopped mid-walk. Her eyes widened with wonder. Watching her changed expressions, he glanced at where she was looking. He was amazed by what he saw ahead.
